His posthumously published masterwork &ldquo;A Sand County Almanac&rdquo; (1949) transformed conservation from an economic endeavor into an ethical and spiritual practice, establishing that humans are &ldquo;plain members and citizens&rdquo; of the biotic community rather than its conquerors.</p> <p>Leopold began his career with the U.S. Forest Service in the early 20th century when conservation was primarily economic and utilitarian - focused on resource management for human benefit.
